Excellent overview of the anti-inflammatory foods we can eat to help our body stay balanced and healthy!

Chronic inflammation is a hallmark of virtually all disease, including cancer, obesity and heart disease. While inflammation is a perfectly normal and beneficial process that occurs when your body’s white blood cells and chemicals protect you from foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses, it leads to trouble when the inflammatory response gets out of hand and continues indefinitely.

Your diet plays a significant if not primary role in this chain of events and is the perfect place to start to address it. Certain nutritional supplements can also be helpful as add-ons.

Below, I’ll review some of the foods, spices and supplements known for their anti-inflammatory power (and the foods known for their inflammatory effects). If you struggle with any chronic health condition, chances are you have inflammation in your body, and would be wise to take a cold hard look at what you’re putting into it.

A key part of an anti-inflammatory diet involves excluding refined vegetable oils, as they are clearly one of the most pernicious and pervasive poisons in the food supply. Simply avoiding all processed foods and most restaurant foods will go a long way toward helping you avoid them.

As for anti-inflammatory foods to eat more of, vegetables are a key staple. Dark leafy greens such as kale, collard greens and Swiss chard contain powerful antioxidants, flavonoids, carotenoids and vitamin C that can help protect against cellular damage. Ideally, opt for organic locally grown veggies that are in season, and consider eating a fair amount of them raw.

Juicing is an excellent way to get more greens into your diet. There’s a caveat, though. If you struggle with autoimmune disease or have significant inflammation in your body, consider limiting vegetables with high lectin content, as the lectins may pose a problem.

Among the most problematic lectin-containing foods are beans, grains, legumes and members of the nightshade family like eggplants, potatoes and peppers. High-lectin foods can be made safer to eat through proper soaking and cooking, as well as fermenting and sprouting. Using a pressure cooker is particularly beneficial for beans. You can learn more about this in my interview with Dr. Steven Gundry, author of “The Plant Paradox.”

Oxalates are another plant component that can cause problems, as they not only will increase inflammation but will worsen your mitochondrial function. Those prone to oxalate kidney stones typically need to be on an oxalate-free diet as well. Foods high in oxalates include potatoes (white and sweet), almonds, seeds, dark chocolate, beets, beans and many others.

On the other hand, raw berries — especially blueberries — are an anti-inflammatory basic, as most tend to be low in fructose while rating high in antioxidant capacity compared to other fruits and vegetables.

The same goes for mushrooms, which are commonly overlooked. Shiitake mushrooms, for example, contain ergothioniene, which inhibits oxidative stress. Mushrooms also contain a number of unique nutrients that you may not get enough of in your diet.

One of those nutrients is copper, which is one of the few metallic elements accompanied by amino and fatty acids that are essential to human health. Since your body can’t synthesize copper, your diet must supply it regularly. Copper deficiency can be a factor in the development of coronary heart disease.

Another excellent anti-inflammatory mushroom is the Reishi, which contains ganoderic acid, a terpene that induces apoptosis (programmed cell death of damaged cells) and enhances the immune system.

A remarkable 50 million were thought to have died as a result of the influenza epidemic of 1918, 100 years ago, but there is now a better explanation for why so many people died

Aspirin went off patent in 1917, allowing it to be available at cheap prices, and because its former patent owner, Bayer, had worldwide distribution of it, aspirin was available easily and cheaply

Medical associations and governments encouraged people to take aspirin or other fever-suppressing drugs for influenza, even though we today know that fever is an important defensive function in the body’s efforts to fight influenza

Leading medical journals of the day actually recommended using 25 aspirin a day to suppress the fever in patients suffering from influenza. Many of the people who died from influenza were found to have bleeding in the lungs, a strange symptom of the flu and a known side effect from aspirin overdose

Homeopathic physicians had remarkably good success in treating people during the 1918 influenza epidemic. Numerous recent studies published in medical journals have found that the homeopathic medicine, oscillococcinum, is effective in treating influenza

Our exposure to germs is natural and necessary to help build and support our immune system!

While we’d like to believe we can just knock out the “bad guys”, we almost always take out the “good guys” along with them…leading to more health challenges.

Our bodies are always trying to heal themselves…we just need to help and support that natural response.

Bottom Line: Being obsessed with cleanliness only makes you more vulnerable to infection–and as we’ve now learned, most likely to cancer as well…especially childhood cancer. Simple cleanliness with soap and water is more than enough to keep you clean. Avoid using antibacterial soaps, which harm your health and compromise your immune system. And keep that in mind when cleaning and bathing your children. Regular soap and water will do the trick. And don’t obsess about a little dirt on their hands. Remember, exposure to a little dirt only makes them stronger.

Over the years, we have explored several times why our obsession with cleanliness only makes us more vulnerable to infectious disease. And today, we’re going to learn about new research that indicates it may also make the youngest and most innocent among us more vulnerable to cancer as well. And the problem is only getting worse.

Although, childhood cancers are “statistically” rare–representing between 0.5% and 4.6%–that still works out to 15,700 kids (ages 0-19) who get cancer each year in the US.1 Worldwide, the numbers range from 50-200 million new cases each year for children.

The average age of children diagnosed with cancer is six

More than 40,000 children undergo treatment for cancer each year in the US

A third of the cases under the age of 15 are from leukemia–the most common form being acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)3

12% of children diagnosed with ALL do not survive4

And that’s the good news. Less rosy is the fact that:

Childhood cancers have risen across the globe by 13% over the last 20 years according to The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which published its findings in Lancet Oncology5

And even, though survival rates have climbed, there is a cost to those improved survival rates; 60% of the children who survive cancer suffer effects later in life such as infertility, heart failure, and secondary cancers6

Hypothyroid (or low thyroid) conditions are pretty much ubiquitous these days.

One of the best books I’ve read on this is Hypothyroidism Type 2: The Epidemic by Mark Starr (see in Favorites).

There are a variety of commons symptoms that most people experience, including constipation, low energy and others listed below.

I’d encourage you to explore this and look into some natural supplements to support your thyroid. …and avoid chlorinated and fluoridated water (drinking, bathing and swimming) if you can. Email me if I can help…

More than 30 million women and 15 million men suffer from symptoms of low thyroid function or poor metabolism, and conventional medicine has few workable solutions for addressing this growing epidemic. But there are some ways you can address low thyroid function naturally without having to just suffer for the rest of your life without hope.

Whether a product of exposure to environmental toxins, persistent anxiety or stress, hormone imbalance or some other trigger, low thyroid function can be devastating. Symptoms include an inability to lose weight, chronic fatigue, difficulty thinking clearly, low energy and depression — and in severe cases, sufferers can feel as though nothing will ever help them feel normal.

But medical expert Dr. Mark Hyman says there are solutions to low thyroid function that won’t break the bank, and won’t lead to a lifetime of pharmaceutical drug dependency. These include the following seven natural steps:

1) Discover the underlying causes of your low thyroid symptoms and address them directly. Many people who suffer from low thyroid function are unaware that the root causes of their disease could be the things they eat and the things to which they expose themselves. This includes food allergies and conditions such as Celiac disease, marked by a severe reaction to the gluten protein found in wheat, barley, rye, spelt and some oats.

Other triggers include heavy metal toxicity from things like vaccines and contaminated rice, as well as nutritional deficiencies and chronic stress. Identifying which nutrients you might be lacking, or determining whether or not your body is storing toxins like mercury and pesticides, can sometimes be difficult. For this reason, it might be helpful to consult with a physician who specializes in these areas:
FunctionalMedicine.org.

2) Maximize your nutritional intake. In order to maintain a well-functioning thyroid, it is important to feed your body with thyroid-boosting nutrients such as iodine, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, selenium and full-spectrum, whole-food-based vitamins. Taking a high-quality probiotic is also important, as the substances that the body uses to make a significant portion of thyroid hormones must first be converted by gut bacteria in order to be usable.

3) Eliminate stress from your life. Constantly worrying and stressing yourself out can take a huge toll on your glandular system, which is why you need to put a stop to it immediately. Adopting a comprehensive stress management program for your life, which may include relaxation techniques, meditation, stretching and exercise, will help minimize the release of the hormone cortisol, which can overstimulate the thyroid gland and cause dysfunction.

4) Exercise. A well-functioning thyroid is dependent upon a proper balance of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), as well as free triiodothyronine (T3) and free thyroxine (T4) thyroid antibodies. Physical exercise, particularly aerobic exercise, can help achieve this balance by triggering the production of these important substances, which tell the thyroid when to produce hormones, and how much to produce.

5) Supplement your diet. Since much of today’s food is lacking in critical nutrients, it may be essential to supplement your diet. Many low thyroid sufferers have inadequate vitamin D levels, for instance, or aren’t consuming enough vitamin A. Getting tested and consulting with a functional medicine specialist who can assist you in how to eat properly will go a long way in addressing your thyroid issues, hopefully bringing you back into balance.

The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends eating plenty of foods high in vitamin B, which include fresh vegetables and sea vegetables, and avoiding those that interfere with thyroid function. These include soybeans, peanuts, millet and some cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli.

6) Take some time for heat therapy. One of the best ways to detoxify your body of heavy metals, pesticides and other poisons that make thyroid problems worse is to use heat therapy. One common issue among thyroid sufferers is that, as they begin to lose stored fat, toxins are released from fat tissue that further inhibit thyroid function, triggering a fresh set of symptoms. But using an infrared sauna, for instance, can help draw out these toxins from fat tissue and expel them through the skin via sweat.

7) Embrace thyroid hormone replacement therapy. When all else fails, thyroid hormone replacement therapy is another option that, if used correctly, can bring about positive results. Desiccated thyroid is a natural thyroid gland extract found in some over-the-counter supplement products, which may help bring your thyroid function back into the optimal range. Natural hormone replacement products like Armour Thyroid, which is also composed of desiccated thyroid, are another option available for those under the care of a trained physician.

There have been quite a few successful natural health approaches created over the last 100 years to deal with cancer (e.g. Rife, Gerson, Hoxsey, Essiac…). All of them involve a change in lifestyle, which is absolutely required. You can’t put junk into your body and expect it to function optimally…and that’s for the things we can control (what we eat, exercise, how we think…) – there are many other factors that we can’t (e.g. air we breathe, certain situations…). If you or someone you love has cancer, you might consider looking into some of these.

Cancer. The very word causes a recoil, a visceral awareness that our statistical probability of “catching” this “disease” is astronomically high. Current statistics tell us 1 out of 2 men and 1 out of 3 women will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lifetime. More than 1 million Americans are diagnosed each year, and this number does not include all forms of cancer.

Johanna Budwig was a brilliant scientist who did in fact develop a protocol that cured cancer.

The problem with her protocol is that there’s no money in it.

We run for the cure, we walk for the cure, we donate more than a billion dollars a year to the American Cancer Society in search for a cure, but still no cure is found. There’s no shot, no magic pill, no elixir that will wipe out cancer. Well, actually, there might be one. We do keep hearing about miracle cures from cannabis oil, but it isn’t available to the one million American citizens who will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Big Pharma has not yet figured out how they can package and sell it without decimating their lucrative cancer treatment income. So the cancer industry chugs along, with annual spending on medical care for cancer treatment totaling around 125 billion a year. Big business. Very big business. Through this conventional treatment, how many will die horrible, painful deaths, their bodies as ravaged by the “treatment” as by the disease? And why? Because there is no cure for cancer? Actually there is.

Johanna Budwig

“I have the answer to cancer, but American doctors won’t listen. They come here and observe my methods and are impressed. Then they want to make a special deal so they can take it home and make a lot of money. I won’t do it, so I’m blackballed in every country.” These are the words of Johanna Budwig. No, she was not a charlatan or a quack. Johanna Budwig was a German scientist, a six time nominee for the Nobel Prize, who held two doctorates, one in medicine and one in pharmaceutical chemistry. She also studied biochemistry, physics, and psychology. Johanna Budwig found the cure for cancer in 1951.

Budwig had been appointed by her government to lead research into the process of hardening oils into solids–in other words, how to make margarine. Through this work, she was the first to discover that trans fatty acids (hydrogenated oils) are detrimental to health. At the same time, she discovered how to cure cancer, along with other diseases including diabetes, liver dysfunctions, cardiovascular problems, and arthritis.

Budwig discovered that cancer cells are simply cells that did not have the nutrients needed at a molecular level (with the right photons and neutrons) to properly mature. She also discovered that unlike the red blood cells of healthy people, the red blood cells of cancer patients did not contain a fatty layer. This discovery led to her cure, a cure with a 90% success rate. (It is good to note that many of her cancer patients were stage 4, sent to her after failed surgery and radiation. One can’t help but wonder if she would have achieved a 100% success rate with early state cancer or even late state cancer without earlier conventional treatment. )

She cured cancer through diet and nutrition. Her diet is a nutritionally dense, additive free, diet without animal products with the exception of quark (a cheese) or cottage cheese that is mixed with flaxseed oil. This mixture of oil and protein gives the body the needed nutrition to heal itself on a molecular level. Cancer cells are sloughed off or absorbed and the body is restored to health within three months.

Budwig wrote and published six books and many articles. She would have contributed more, had she not spent many exhaustive years in litigation with margarine companies and was restricted through the courts, at times, from publishing.

Earthing, the process of obtaining a sense of connectedness with the earth by honing in on the body’s naturally occurring electrical frequencies and those of the earth, is an ideal way to optimize overall physical and mental health. Pioneers in the concept maintain that the earth’s electrons help neutralize free radicals, and by using the body as a conduit, it’s possible for such beneficial energy to be directly transferred to an individual.(1,2)

Removing barriers that hinder this process — shoes, gardening gloves or any other insulating item — and instead engaging in activities like walking barefoot on the grass or a beach for up to 30 minutes daily, or gardening (carefully) with bare hands, has been shown to be an effective way to stave off health problems.(1) Holistic and herbal experts explain that, by wearing rubber- or plastic-soled shoes, people are literally shielding themselves from the earth, putting up a barrier that prevents them from accessing better health; “we are limiting ourselves from untapped resources and thus restricting our exposure to the greatest antioxidant source in the world.”(2)

For those who are unable to engage in such activities, grounding technologies like earthing sheets, sandals and car seat covers serve to accomplish the same or similar goals.

How earthing helps health

Studies have shown that becoming grounded in this manner boosts energy, enhances the immune system, promotes faster healing and reduces stress. Research published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine has linked earthing with the ability to resynchronize cortisol secretion so that it is more balanced with its normal rhythm.(1) Cortisol is also referred to as the stress hormone.

Dr. Daniel Chong, who is a naturopathic physician licensed in the state of Oregon, says that earthing “saturates the healthy tissue in your body with negative electrons, creates a barrier through which these free radicals cannot pass, in turn protecting you from the outlying damage they would otherwise cause.”(3)

Earthing is effective for those looking for ways to reduce inflammation

He notes that earthing helps reduce inflammation which can lead to the development of chronic diseases such as cancer and arthritis, and also explains that touching the earth helps boost blood flow.

Earthing is also a great way to reconnect with ourselves.

Getting outdoors and feeling things like soil, leaves and grass in this way has been said to be nourishing for the mind, body and soul, allowing people to feel at one with nature and the world.(4)

Auto-immune disorders are crippling the people of this planet. Whether it’s celiac, Graves, Hashimoto’s, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, or lupus, these disorders cause considerable pain and destruction of all areas of the body. Although many sufferers have been able to manage their condition by avoiding inflammatory foods, taking medications, and using natural therapies, few seem to be able to get rid of it entirely.

These are some of the core reasons.

Heavy metal toxicity
Heavy metals are at the root of many different health conditions, including auto-immune diseases. You would think that they would be quite easy to avoid, but the prevalence of them in seafood, dental amalgams, vaccinations, personal care products, cookware, baking powder, smoke, paint, and soda cans, ensure that most everyone has some degree of heavy metal toxicity.

These deadly toxins have an affinity to lodge in fatty tissues of the body (like joints and the brain), and repel beneficial bacteria in the gut. Due to this, heavy metal toxicity ruins the digestive and immune systems, which causes chronic pain, fatigue, brain fog, poor memory, digestive problems, skin problems, paralysis, and even more conditions often associated with an auto-immune disorder.

To completely get rid of autoimmune disorders, testing for and removing heavy metals is a high priority.

Eating “healthy” foods that hurt it
A good start to repairing the root cause of autoimmune issues is to eat cleaner foods to avoid adding an additional toxic load to your digestive system, which will end up poisoning the rest of your body and causing more inflammation and pain. However, just because a food is organic, doesn’t mean that is healthy for you. In fact, it can cause all kinds of issues for those with an autoimmune condition.

Healthy, organic foods that can easily flare up and keep your autoimmune condition from taking a hike include corn, nuts, grains (including those with no gluten), eggs, dairy, nightshade plants (goji berries, tomatoes, white potatoes, peppers), and more. Bottom line, anything that can compromise digestion will likely have an adverse affect on an existing autoimmune issue, and that includes whole, organic foods.

Not enough live probiotics
If you suffer from an autoimmune disease, it is likely that you have a leaky gut. This is caused by an unhealthy gut flora imbalance that leads to several different digestive conditions, including Candida that ends up ravaging the intestinal wall and making it far too permeable. Undigested foods and proteins pass into the bloodstream, which creates a chronic inflammatory immune response and plenty of pain.

To remedy this condition, a good source of live food based probiotics is imperative. Sticking with fermented vegetables, non-dairy kefirs, and apple cider vinegar on a daily basis is a great start to repopulating and “sealing” the gut so you can extinguish the inflammatory response.

Not enough live enzymes
Another significant factor in an autoimmune disease is the lack of different enzymes present in the food that is eaten consistently.

The human body makes approximately 22 digestive enzymes capable of digesting protein, carbohydrates, sugars, and fats. Food is digested in stages, beginning in the mouth, moving to the stomach, and finally through the small intestine. At each step, specific enzymes break down different types of foods.

Unfortunately, people tend to eat foods that are very enzyme deficient and as a result don’t fill the massively depleted enzymes stores in their body. One of the best ways to ingest live enzymes is through eating copious amount of fruits and vegetables each day. Making juices, salads, and smoothies is a great way to start.

There are several other factors that could contribute to an autoimmune condition, including vitamin D deficiency and a reliance on prescriptions, but the root of this condition always comes back to an improperly functioning digestive system that leads to a leaky gut and other system malfunctions as well.
